Judge Michael J. Stading is a native and lifelong resident of North Carolina. He is the son of a North Carolina public school teacher and construction engineer. He graduated from Independence High School where he was captain of the wrestling team and began dating his wife, Jennie. Judge Stading completed undergraduate studies at the Kenan Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and law school at Campbell University. After earning his law degree, he and Jennie returned to their hometown where they raised their three children. In his spare time, he enjoys staying active with his family through jiujitsu and coaching his kids in sports. Judge Stading is an active member of the local community where he has served as pro bono legal counsel to the Mint Hill Athletic Association, and currently is the Judge Advocate for American Legion Post #555, a member of the Mecklenburg Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution, and a Worship Coordinator at Christ Covenant Church.

Judge Stading is admitted to practice in North Carolina State Court, the District of Columbia, the Western District of North Carolina Federal Court, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. Early in his legal career, he worked as a prosecutor in North Carolina. In 2012, Judge Stading successfully completed the requirements of the North Carolina State Bar to become a Board-Certified Specialist in state criminal law. In 2018 and 2023, he completed the requirements for specialist recertification. Until Judge Stading’s investiture as a district court judge in January of 2019, he operated his own law office. As a part of his law practice, he served as counsel for the local Fraternal Order of Police. In his tenure as a trial attorney, he acted as principal counsel in numerous bench and jury trials in the capacities of prosecutor or defense attorney. While a district court judge, he served as a Truancy Court judge, Drug STEP Court judge, lead domestic violence judge, and member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Professionalism Committee.

In November of 2022, Judge Stading was elected to an eight-year term as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In his current role, he has presented criminal law case updates at the North Carolina District Court Judge’s Conference. He is also a certified Superior Court Mediator and commissioner on the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission. Moreover, Judge Stading concurrently serves as a reservist Assistant Staff Judge Advocate for the United States Air Force. In 2016, he took the oath to commission as an officer and went on to graduate from Squadron Officer School as a Distinguished Graduate, Officer Training School in the Honor Flight, and the Judge Advocate General’s School. In 2022, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
